Rolling Road Day

Powerstation, Cheltenham

21st September 2002

An interesting day with a consistent set of results across the range of stock cars present. There were some questions about accuracy as the figures seemed to be lower than those obtained at Power Engineering last year, however I'm happy as my boost controller shows an improvement of at least 27 bhp, so if Powerstation's road does measure lower that figure might actually be higher!

Erratic boost

I was first on, and no, I didn't bribe them to get 2nd place with 329bhp! ;-) That's mainly down to the DSBC I fitted this year. A decent torque figure too at 346lb/ft.

I was followed by Anis who scored top in the power stakes with 333.5. Anis has also recently added a HKS boost controller. And boy, just look at that torque at 363lb/ft!

This is Pete Draper, who scored a surprisingly low 263bhp. It turns out Pete is running standard unleaded. I guess pensioners just can't afford Optimax! ;-)

Next was Brendan who was quite disappointed with his score, but when you look at the figures he is still within the power range for cars without a boost controller (275-288) so he shouldn't be too upset.

General mug shot with Andre on his knees praying for a decent score! ;-)

Urrr, I think this is Andre's car. Again, a decent score (285.5) for a car with no boost controller.

The tension mounts...

"My car's faster than yours! Nyaaaaaaa!"

Dave McCarthy's car coming out bang on 280bhp. I think we were a bit surprised as it's a UK spec car and we were expecting a bit more (like 300+). Perhaps this road is reading a bit low after all?

This is Dave trying not to get too excited! ;-)

The plush leather interior of Dave's UK spec 3000GT. Jap's don't seem to like leather so you won't find many imports with it.

Ron Baggett only managed 288.5 despite having a boost controller. Then we found out he is also running on standard unleaded. Try Optimax guys, these cars are designed for 100 RON not 95!

Cobus Wasserman came in at a not spectacular 275.5bhp, but pretty good torque at 323lb/ft

Tim Kiver got a stonking result with his bleeder valve (317bhp). He's been very careful to set this up properly. It would be interesting to see his boost profile as I suspect it would tail off quite quickly at high revs.

Dave Rose managed a good score with 292bhp for a totally stock car.

Dave Rose doing his David Bailey impression (not enough topless birds though eh Dave?) ;-)

It took a couple of attempts to get a decent reading on Simon Jones' car and even then it only managed 293bhp even with a DSBC (not enough to join the 300+ club then!). Simon suspects he may have a boost leak somewhere (yeah yeah yeah!).

Kev "Canker" Hodgson came in at 302bhp with a DSBC fitted.

The "I don't want anyone to talk to me" club! Andre and Kev watching the dynometer.

Pete Webber managed 304.5bhp with an HKS boot contoller and various other mods. Couldn't help feeling this was a little low, and there's a BIG dip at 4500 revs, so his AFC may need tweaking.

Rich, the operator, is sitting in the car showing us the boost levels on Mark Davenport's car. It would quickly reach 1bar and then just suddenly shut off. As a result loads of power was lost and it was impossible to get a decent reading. Apparently this car has some sort of custom ECU but it seems something ain't set up right.

And finally we have Ivan, who also did well with a bleeder valve and a whopping chunk of torque (357lb/ft!). This was the result of what looked like a boost spike at around 3000 rpm and is exactly why bleeder valves can be so dangerous.

Time for a drink, thirsty work eh Sully?

Chomp, chomp, chomp!

What a great backdrop! ;-)
