BOX HILL MEET

Saturday 3rd February 2001

Box Hill service area, Box Hill, Surrey

Wow, what a turn out! I counted 24 GTO's amongst a plethora of Japanese supercars that consisted of Toyota Supra's, Mitsubishi EVO's, Nissan Skyline's, Nissan Sunny GTi-R's, Scooby Impreza'a and even the odd lonely looking FTO. This was the largest gathering of GTO's ever in the country and it was great meeting everyone and finally putting faces to names. I reckon we may have even outnumbered the Supras (please let me know if anyone counted them). Not bad for a club that has only existed for 18 months eh?

The day was spent generally chatting, admiring other cars and posing as part of a convey on the way to the pub at the top of Box Hill where a very enjoyable pint of Young's Special could be had! (Not that I condone drink-driving, I only had one orrificer, honeshtly!) :-)

Highlight of the day must have been the daft Supra driver who exited Box Hill car park and drove the wrong way up the dual carriageway at a not exactly pedestrian pace - a loud "Ooooooh" could be heard from the crowd as everyone waited for the bang, but the driver obviously realised his error as we saw him zoom past, in the correct direction this time!

So, here were the attendees I made a note of, if you were present and aren't on this list, please let me know and I will add you:

Those of us who arrived early were lucky enough to get lined up (panoramic mosaic at the top of this page), but the car park soon filled up and there were GTO's scattered around all over the place.

Also no sign of any police, which I thought was rather unusual.

Now for the photo's, first some line-ups...

My personal favourites are these two. I think it's just something about the lighting in the second one that I like...

I also took some pictures of individual cars...

I'm not sure who's 3000GT this is, but note that it has 3000GT on the bumper, and GTO on the inset between the reversing lights! Someone's been playing! :-)

Tony Bryan's GTO with headlamp mod and Bozz Speed spoiler (?) - is this what they call the "snake-eye's" mod?

Mark Van Rooyen's rather striking looking blue GTO - I think that's Phil Green's next to his. Still not sure you should be running on LRP Mark! ;-)

There were quite a few fat exhausts to be seen - here's an example on Andy Flower's car - Hellooooo, is there anyone in there?

Mad Spoiler alert!!! Just look at that - Stevie Robb's car

Stevie Robb's car attracting more interest. Stevie has set up Kempwood Auto's, a GTO specialist, and will be modifying this car

Then there was the convoy up the hill. There's just something about being in a convoy and seeing a line of GTO's snaking away in front of you, you just can't stop grinning! Once up the top, time for a bit of syncronised reversing, then off to the pub...

Some general shots of the event...

And pictures of some of the other cars there...

I was told that this Supra generates in excess of 800bhp!!!

Just look at the size of that turbo - it's HUGE!

Nissan Sunny GTi-R. Surprised we didn't see more of these boys as there is a large following

A very sexy looking Skyline

An immaculate EVO VI - is this a "Tommy Makinnen" special edition?

Looks like this fella took a short cut through the woods! ;-)

See you next at Santa Pod on 8th April hopefully!
